Designs were revealed last week at an Infill Philadelphia: Industrial Sites event. Infill Philadelphia, sponsored by the Community Design Collaborative and the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation, involved having design teams come up with creative visions for reusing three old industrial spaces: The wing of an old factory and an abutting lot in North Philadelphia; a vacant manufacturing complex in Kensington; and a section of land on the southwest bank of the Schuylkill. For the North Philly site, SMP Architects came up with an “industrial piazza and materials garden draw residents on-site to watch artisans at work in garage incubators or use the community tech shop.” For the Kensington site on Oxford Street, DIGSAU used “tiny, picturesque Hope Street as the link between its industrial and residential gardens and as the entry point to a new pedestrian ramp that ties this seven-building complex together.” And for the Schuylkill site, Charles Loomis Chariss McAfee Architects wove a bike path and trails through an “eco-industrial” park.
