Retooling Industrial Sites
CALL FOR ENTRIES
Deadline for submissions extended to December 18
OVERVIEW
The Community Design Collaborative, in partnership with the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation, is seeking submissions for Retooling Industrial Sites, an exhibit to showcase the exciting possibilities for the reuse of neighborhood industrial sites; where unused sites are brought back to life. The Retooling Industrial Sites exhibit has been designed as an opportunity for architecture, planning and engineering firms from the Mid-Atlantic region to highlight their own best practices in industrial reuse. Submissions of all project types and scales encouraged: large and small, built and un-built, interior and exterior, new construction and preservation.
This exhibit will open February 2, 2010, with the public launch of the Infill Philadelphia: Industrial Sites design challenge, the third phase of a five-year initiative launched by The Community Design Collaborative, and will close March 25. Infill Philadelphia brings together design practitioners, community development experts, policymakers, funders and the media to address urban infill development - a significant neighborhood revitalization strategy for Philadelphia and older American cities. Infill development sites are best characterized as neglected public spaces and clusters of vacant or nearly-empty buildings and land. Over time, these sites can obstruct community development plans and even threaten neighborhood stability and growth.
ELIGIBILITY
Eligible projects include industrial sites returned to industrial or transformed into commercial, open space, and/or residential uses (including but not limited to single-story former machine shops, garages, multi-story factories or warehouses, or new construction on brownfield sites). Projects must be submitted by an authorized principal or partner of an architecture, landscape design or planning firm, located within the Mid-Atlantic region.
CRITERIA
Submissions for this exhibit will be reviewed and selected by a panel of diverse experts who will be looking for the projects to:
- Promote best practices in the reuse of industrial sites.
- Highlight creativity in process, design and innovation.
- Integrate sustainable design strategies.
